Psychoanalytic Treatment of Trauma in Adults - Presented by Nate Koser, Ph.D, LPC

In this workshop, attendees will be presented with a psychoanalytic perspective on trauma from the literature of Freud and Lacan. Attendees will be shown how trauma was, in fact, causal in the establishment of psychoanalytic theory and practice. Attendees will also be instructed on how the definition of trauma within psychoanalytic theory leads logically to the clinical practice used to address the implications of trauma for the life of an individual. Along with fundamental concepts, definitions, and treatment implications, attendees will also be presented with various case examples in order to solidify their understanding of the material. The presenter will address how a psychoanalytic perspective is both unique, and applicable for clinicians working from other orientations.

Attendees will learn: psychoanalytic definition of trauma, fundamental concepts and definitions of a psychoanalytic approach to trauma, clinical implications for practice and the treatment of trauma in an adult population, and how trauma and its treatment may look from a psychoanalytic orientation.

Fostering Dialogue for Advocacy with Policymakers - Presented by Jeff Lown, Ed.S.

A question-and-answer format panel that is moderated by this presenter, in which counselors from school and clinical settings can speak directly to a panel of elected policymakers regarding initiatives related to mental health, how to more effectively communicate with legislators, how to participate in drafting and advancement of legislation, and opportunity for attendees to voice their concerns and proposals directly to those in decision-making positions.

Along with the panelists, this presenter would also provide historical context for previous legislative efforts, inform and clarify for attendees existing advocacy committees and initiatives, and educate them on how or with whom to partner to advance advocacy efforts in the future.

  1. Attendees will be able to identify and contact their elected representatives.
  2. Attendees will learn historical precedence and context for counselors as advocates
  3. Attendees will learn what current bodies there are locally, in the state, and nationally that are working to advance the interests of identified clinical populations, the interests of career counselors, and the overall well-being of their communities.
  4. Attendees will learn effective methods of communicating and with their representatives and advocating for their profession and their clients and communities.
