 Northern Virginia Chapter  presents
Counseling Adult Survivors of Child Sexual Abuse
Part of an Advanced Training Series on Special Topics in Counseling
Hosted by Argosy University

Earn 7 NBCC Continuing Education Clock Hours for $70

This workshop will address the continuing and ever-present trauma of past sexual abuse, the aftereffects on mental health, relationships, and family dynamics. Adult survivors of child sexual abuse are as prevalent now as ever, perhaps even more. The ability to live life successfully and achieve many things is a regular occurrence with many adult survivors. We have learned well how to disguise and discount the trauma that may have occurred long ago. Sadly, that trauma will not stay silent however, and as counselors, we must continue to learn and perfect skills and compassion for adult survivors.

Topics that will be discussed include working within the gender lens, learning the possible manifestations of abuse for each person, exploring the connection between Substance Abuse and eating disorders, sexual acting out, failure to maintain primary relationships, depression, as examples. We will work on developing strategies for helping in an empathic and realistic manner, and participants will experience some of the difficult scenarios that play out when counseling an adult survivor. Participants will explore their personal attitudes about abuse in general, and on other levels.

Presenter:  Dr. Catherine B. Roland, LPC, NCC  Immediate Past-President of the American Counseling Association
