VA-ASERVIC - When Law and Ethics Do Not Agree: Looking at Conscientious Objection Laws as a Professional Counselor

Sponsored by VA-ASERVIC (a division of the Virginia Counselors Association)

Earn 2 NBCC Continuing Education Hours in Ethics

This training can be attended as a webinar or at Marymount University.

The ACA Code of Ethics (2014) insists personal values of the counselor come second to the needs to the client. However, states are passing conscientious objection laws allowing counselors’ religious beliefs to be of more importance. This presentation will look at how to navigate potential conflicts from an ethical perspective.

Learning Objectives: 1) Participants will understand the evolution of the ACA Code of Ethics; 2) Participants will learn about ethical decision making models and how to apply them to this particular dilemma; 3) Participants will learn how to assess their own personal values and how to address values conflicts within the therapeutic environment.

Presenter: Dr. Michelle Wade is an Assistant Professor at Marymount University in their Department of Counseling. She is also licensed counselor in Maryland and Virginia and was an in-home therapist for over 10 years. She is a proud member of the American Counseling Association (ACA). She is a member of the Virginia Counseling Association (VCA) and the Maryland Counseling Association (MCA). She is also a member of a number of divisions at the national and state levels. She currently serves as Ethics Committee Chair for VCA. She served as Ethics Specialist for the ACA and holds national certifications as a Nationally Certified Counselor (NCC), Approved Clinical Supervisor (ACS) and Distance Credentialed Counselor (DCC). Her research interests include ethics and the use of social media, smartphone applications, and other technology within counseling.  Dr. Wade has presented and written on these topics a number of times and always appreciates being able to engage in conversations around these ideas.
