Resolving Conflicts of Conscience: Bridging the Gaps Between Religious and Professional Ethics Regarding Services for Clients with Concerns Related to LGBTQ Identity

Presented by: Charles Shepard, LPC, NCCClinician, Augusta Psychological Associates • Student, Ph.D. in Counseling and Supervision, James Madison University

The year 2018 marks 45 years since the American Psychiatric Association (APA) depathologized homosexual orientation. Nevertheless, ethical debates about whether or not professional counselors should serve patients with concerns related to affirming diversity of sexual orientation, sexual identity, and gender identity remain controversial. Opposing positions often separate along lines of religious and professional ethics. Lost in the void created by this seemingly entrenched discourse are a host of suffering individuals and families who could benefit from religiously informed and LGBTQ-affirming services as well as the awareness of an emerging opportunity for ally development among practitioners, educators, and trainees. The purpose of this presentation is to examine some of the pitfalls that stall resolution to conflicts of conscience, propose relevant shifts in religious- and professional-ethics paradigms, and to provide insights that may help spur future research that supports a counselor’s fidelity to religious and professional ethics regarding services to clients with LGBTQ-related concerns.

Learning Objectives:  1) Attendees will learn the historical context for the debate about providing LGBTQ-affirming services as a religiously informed and influenced counselor.  2)Attendees will have the opportunity to consider new or unfamiliar perspectives on relating religion and science in ways that may help support the provision of LGBTQ-affirming services from a religiously informed perspective.  3) Attendees will have opportunities for experiential learning regarding the wide-range of circumstances to consider when confronted with the challenges of helping LGBTQ-identifying clients manage the difficulties associated with being an LGBTQ-identifying person in a non-affirming religious context.
