RACA Talks: LGBTQIA+
Presented by Ari Laoch, M.S., CRC, CBIST
The first 2019 RACA talks will be centered on improving cultural competence of counselors in working with people within the LGBTQ+ community. The dialogue will come from a strength-based foundation to evaluate and consider the many layers of survival and success from within the community. While language and time must be spent in familiarizing counselors with the challenges people within the LGBTQI+ community face, Ari looks for the opportunity to share evidence-based interventions that have been most successful in building strength and supporting people within the LGBTQI+ community. Current language, contributions in legislation and public figures, as well as opportunities for further learning will be discussed.
Learning Objectives:
- Current language in personal identifiers within the LGBTQ+ community
- The relationship of trauma and survival for people within the LGBTQ+ community
- Challenges and barriers in mental health for persons within LGBTQ+ community
