VA-ASERVIC - Social Media in Counseling: Ethical and Practical Considerations

In this day and age, social media is used not only for communication, but also as a platform for identity development. Individuals live their lives on display for all to see and award increasing amounts of value upon their presence and reception in the social media realm. This presentation will provide ethical and practical guidance to help professionals understand the impact of social media on their clients and to help them use social media wisely in and out of the counseling relationship.

Learning Objectives  1. Participants will be able to assess their personal values, their practical competency, and their cultural competency with regards to the use of social media during the counseling relationship. 2. Participants will learn ways to ethically use social media and smartphone applications with client in a therapeutic manner. 3. Participants will learn and develop skills in conducting difficult conversations regarding social media and its influence in clients’ lives.

Presenter: Dr. Michelle Wade is an Assistant Professor at Marymount University in their Department of Counseling. She is also licensed counselor in Maryland and Virginia and was an in-home therapist for over 10 years. She is a proud member of the American Counseling Association (ACA). She is a member of the Virginia Counseling Association (VCA) and the Maryland Counseling Association (MCA). She is also a member of a number of divisions at the national and state levels. She currently serves as Ethics Committee Chair for VCA. She served as Ethics Specialist for the ACA and holds national certifications as a Nationally Certified Counselor (NCC), Approved Clinical Supervisor (ACS) and Distance Credentialed Counselor (DCC). Her research interests include ethics and the use of social media, smartphone applications, and other technology within counseling.  Dr. Wade has presented and written on these topics a number of times and always appreciates being able to engage in conversations around these ideas.

Cancellation PolicyTo receive a full refund, minus a $10 administrative fee, registrants must cancel at least three (3) days prior to the start of the workshop. Cancellations and/or no shows with less than a one (1) day notice will be reviewed after all expenses have been paid, a determination will be made regarding the ability to honor the request minus cost of guaranteed meals/special event fees.
