This event will focus on the topic of integrated care for professional counselors. Refreshments will be provided. During the first hour, Kelly Atwood, PsyD, LPC, LCP, Director of Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) at James Madison University [JMU], will present on the topic of Integrated Care for Professional Counselors. Following Dr. Atwood's presentation, a panel of professionals who work in integrated care settings will respond to common considerations and questions related to working within models of integrated care. Members of the panel include Meg Whitman, MSN, RN, Clinical Services Director for the Harrisonburg-Rockingham Free Clinic; Matt Bukowski, LPC, Doctoral Candidate in Counselor Education and Supervision at JMU; and Susan Adamson, LPN, faculty in the Physician Assistant Program at JMU.

Session A:  Integrated Care for Professional Counselors

 

Kelly Atwood, PsyD, LPC, LCP, Director of Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) at James Madison University [JMU], will present on the topic of Integrated Care for Professional Counselors. She will discuss the history and development of integrated care, introducing attendees to core concepts related to the field as well as the advantages this type of care offers clients. In addition, she will identify barriers that often impact clinicians in integrated care practices and offer recommendations for working through them. This session will be appropriate for those who know little about the topic as well as those who already work within an integrated care setting.

 

Learning Objectives

  1. Participants will understand introductory concepts, models, and best practices related to integrated care.
  2. Participants will acquire strategies to address barriers related to providing integrated care.
  3. Participants will learn to apply integrated care practices within their own work setting through co-located, coordinated, and fully integrated models.

Presenter Bio: Kelly Atwood, PsyD, LPC, LCP: Dr. Atwood is the director of James Madison University’s Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) and teaches in JMU’s Combined-Integrated Doctoral Program in Clinical and School Psychology. She has completed a postdoctoral research on integrated care

 

Session B:Integrated Care: On the Ground

 

Building on the first session, the second, Integrated Care: On the Ground, will consist of a panel of professionals at the Free Clinic: Kelly Atwood, PsyD, LPC, LCP, Director of Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS); Meg Whitman, MSN, RN, Clinical Services Director for the Harrisonburg-Rockingham Free Clinic; Matt Bukowski, LPC, Doctoral Candidate in Counselor Education and Supervision at JMU; and Susan Adamson, LNP, Physician Assistant Program at JMU. Participants will encounter real examples of the challenges and benefits of integrated care through interaction with a panel of practitioners who work within the Free Clinic’s integrated care setting. A Q&A portion will conclude the session, giving participants the opportunity to ask the panel other questions about their work.

 

Learning Objectives

  1. Participants will understand the challenges and solutions related to integrated care at the Free Clinic.
  2. Participants will be able to identify tools and techniques used at the Free Clinic to efficiently coordinate client care.
  3. Participants will learn about goals toward which the Free Clinic is striving in order to better serve the Harrisonburg-Rockingham area.

 

Panel Presenter Bios

Meg Whitman, MSN, RN: Ms. Whitman serves as the Clinical Services Director for the Harrisonburg-Rockingham Free Clinic.

Susan Adamson, LPN: Ms. Adamson is a Licensed Nurse Practitioner and teaches in James Madison University’s Physician Assistant Program. She coordinates and supervises the JMU PA students who serve the Harrisonburg-Rockingham Free Clinic.

Matt Bukowski, LPC: Mr. Bukowski is a Licensed Professional Counselor in Virginia and a Doctoral Candidate in James Madison University’s PhD in Counselor Education and Supervision program. Mr. Bukowski has provided supervision and clinical counseling services at the Harrisonburg-Rockingham Free Clinic

 

 

 

 

 

Virginia Counselors Association has been approved by NBCC as an Approved Continuing Education Provider, ACEP No. 2047.  Programs that do not qualify for NBCC credit are clearly identified. Virginia Counselors Association is solely responsible for all aspects of the programs.

Cancellation PolicyTo receive a full refund, minus a $10 administrative fee, registrants must cancel at least 5 days prior to the start of the workshop.  Cancellations and/or no shows with less than a 5-day notice will be reviewed after all expenses have been paid, a determination will be made regarding the ability to honor the request minus cost of guaranteed meals/special event fees.
