RACA Talks:  Using the ASERVIC Competencies: How Is The Profession Doing?

Presented by Kathleen McCleskey, Ph.D., NCC

The Association for Spiritual, Ethical, and Religious Issues in Counseling division (ASERVIC) created the ASERVIC Competencies for Addressing Spiritual and Religious Issues in Counseling (2009) to give direction to counselors about responsibly incorporating spirituality, religious beliefs, and nonreligious beliefs into counseling. This session will go over the ASERVIC competencies as well as discuss relevant literature about counselors’ awareness of them and reported use of the competencies or the concepts from them. Discussion will include how these competencies are being used in attendees’ work, barriers to using them, and as well as how the competencies could enhance counseling work.

Learning Objectives:

1. Attendees will become familiar with the ASERVIC competencies.

2. Attendees will learn about research pertaining to the awareness of the ASERVIC competencies and their use.

3. Attendees will examine their own spiritual/religious/nonreligious identities and how that can impact potential work with clients.
