ROACA VIRTUAL FALL FORUM

9:00-9:10 Welcome

9:15 – 10:15 – Keynote

Session Title: Energy Hygiene: Taking Care of Ourselves as Professional Counselors

Presenter: Dr. Laura Farmer, Ph.D., LPC, CSAC and Approved Clinical Supervisor in VA

Description: Albert Einstein discovered long ago that everything is energy, which has important implications for every aspect of life – including our counseling relationships. The conscious mind – our thoughts and emotions – is comprised of energy. Beyond the visible and verbal exchanges that take place in our counseling interactions, there are more subtle yet dynamic energetic exchanges occurring as well.  This keynote session will provide insight about these invisible energy exchanges with the support of scientific evidence, recent studies, and theoretical perspectives. Counselors will leave this session with practical techniques and exercises for establishing and maintaining good energy hygiene, an essential component of counselor wellness and vitality.

Learning Objectives:

  • Define and discuss the relevance of energy in counseling work, including the relationship between the physical body, energetic body, and subtle energy exchanged between people
  • Discuss how thoughts and emotions (your own and others) impact one’s energy field.
  • Identify and practice 3 energy hygiene practices for counselor self-care

10:15 – 10:20 Break

10:20 – 11:20 – Breakout

Session Title: Mindfulness for Resilience and Well-being

Presenter: Laurie Seidel, RN, MSN, BSN, Certified Mindfulness Teacher, Certified CARE (Cultivating Awareness and Resilience in Education) Facilitator

Description: During this session participants will learn the definition of mindfulness and the benefits of mindfulness from the evidence.  As we explore the impact that chronic stress can make on our physical and mental health, we will identify ways that mindfulness can counteract these effects.  A discussion of ways to weave mindfulness into daily life will be facilitated, including identifying transitions in the day.  Additionally, during the session participants will have the opportunity to learn mindfulness skills that can be employed right at work, during the course of a busy workday.

Learning Objectives:

  • Define mindfulness and explore the benefits of mindfulness practice
  • Explore the physiology of chronic stress, and how mindfulness counteracts it
  • Describe ways that mindfulness skills can be incorporated into daily life
