Morning Mindfulness in Virginia (E-F)

Mindfulness is the art of conscious living and being in the present moment. It is the intentional attending to what is happening right now without judgment or reaction. The purpose of the morning practice group is to provide an opportunity for participants to have a place to begin their day internally reflecting on their experience in the here and now. The structure of the 30-45 minute practice group will be a welcome, a lightly guided mindful meditation, and silent sitting practice. We will conclude with an open discussion session of mindful sharing from our hearts of our practice experience and mindful listening. The session will be available on Thursday, Friday and Saturday mornings from 7:30-8:30am.

Candlelight Vigil for the Victims of the Orlando shootings

On June 12, 2016, Omar Mateen open fire inside the Pulse nightclub in Orlando, Florida. Fourty-nine people and 53 others were wounded. This incident is the deadliest mass shooting by a single shooter and the deadliest incident of violence against the LGBT community in United States history. As counselors we recognize the complexity in healing from tragedy. We also understand the importance for compassion and support in a time of darkness. Please join VA-ASERVIC and VA-ALGBTIC in solidarity and reflection in remembering and honoring the lives of those who were lost at the Pulse nightclub. We will hold a candle light vigil, a moment of silence, and words to address the spiritual needs of attendees affected by this tragedy. All are welcome to attend. Piedmont C

Documentary Film - Thank You for Your Service

Join us back in the Virginia Room, on Friday evening for 2 more CEs. We will be watching this powerful documentary detailing how the U.S. military faces a mental health crisis of historic proportions. Thank You for Your Service takes aim at our superficial understanding of war trauma and the failed policies that have resulted. Director Tom Donahue interweaves the stories of four Iraq War veterans with candid interviews of top military and civilian leaders. Observing the systemic neglect, the film argues for significant internal change and offers a roadmap of hope. Interviews include Defense Secretary Robert Gates, Admiral Mike Mullen, Generals David Petraeus and Loree Sutton, Sebastian Junger, Nicholas Kristof, Dexter Filkins, Senator Patty Murray, Mayor Rudy Giuliani, and Colonels Lawrence Wilkerson and Dave Sutherland. Thank You For Your Service has been awarded Best Documentary Feature at the GI Film Festival (May, 2016) and the Impact Award at the Illuminate Film Festival (June, 2016). A discussion after the screening will be facilitated by Dr. Linda Leitch-Alford and will include William Rodriguez, Dr. Brian Meyer, Betty Ann Liddell, and Carrie Ann Alford. Please join us for this important event.
