VCA Member Services and Benefits:

  • VCA retains the legal firm B2L Consulting to provide lobbyist and legal services for all VCA members. Our lobbyists provide up to date, accurate information regarding pending legislative and policy events that affect counselors in Virginia. As the official state branch of the American Counseling Association, VCA also benefits from the services of legislative and public policy advocates employed at the national level.
  • VCA provides comprehensive, affordable, and accessible professional development opportunities designed to offer relevant, timely continuing education to counselors in Virginia. Recognized by the Virginia Board of Counseling, VCA is also a National Board of Certified Counselors-approved provider of continuing education credit.
  • The VCA Convention held every fall offers extensive professional development opportunities at a discounted rate for members, as well as the chance to network and meet other counselors. For a very affordable fee, counselors can obtain continuing education units or contact hours through participation in an array of diverse, professional development workshops.
  • VCA produces the annual peer-reviewed publication, The Virginia Counselors Journal, as well as The Virginia Counselor, a national award winning newsletter available on-line to members only, plus chapter and division newsletters.

VCA and Clinical Counselors:

  • VCA's division for clinical counselors is the Virginia Clinical Counselors Alliance (VCCA). This division represents counselors in clinical, community, and private practice settings, including licensed professional counselors, rehabilitation counselors, substance abuse counselors, and marriage and family counselors.

VCA and School Counselors:

  • Virginia Alliance for School Counseling (VASC) – For counselors working in a school setting, a supervisor of school counselors, a graduate student or a counselor educator. This division is progressive and focused on providing information and assistance to school counselors who are counselors first, and who work in a school setting.

VCA Accomplishments include:

  • Spearheading legislation to be the first state to license professional counselors.
  • Facilitating the introduction and passage of 2002 legislation that provides statutory authority for the Board of Counseling to establish continuing education requirements and regulations for Licensed Practical Counselors.
  • Providing professional development through an annual convention and VCA Chapter & Division professional development workshops & events, for counselors in all settings, at a discounted member rate.
  • Sponsoring an annual Legislative Day to advocate for public policy and legislative issues affecting counselors across work settings.
  • Establishing the VCA Foundation to provide long-term fiscal stability and fund innovative counseling research and community programs.
